This is the little nugget that will be most worth your reading investment! This is the nut, that once you crack it, will have you going places you only dreamed and accomplishing things you thought you could never do.
Before you hop in your rig and hit the trail what do you do? You pick a destination! You look at a map or GPS and find your path. Why did you pick the destination you picked - it might be that there is a great view, or just to get away, or maybe its the fishing, or maybe it's the journey to get there.
I have to start with a book that I love and look forward to reading again. Simon Sinek's "Start with Why", it's an exploration of the greatest companies, their leaders and the thing that made them unstoppable. Have you ever been working on something when it gets difficult or boring and then you ask "why am I doing this?" If you don't really know why, you drop it and walk away feeling like it was all pointless. Well this is the exact opposite of that! Start with why you want something and really feel that feeling of getting or accomplishing it. You can imagine in your mind achieving that result and feel the feelings of accomplishment. That is the feeling that will propel you though the work, blood, sweat and tears that will get you what you really want. After you get in touch with your why, you have to connect it to your what and how, plus you can add a multiplier of who.
What is like your vehicle it's the mechanism you are going to use to fulfill your why. To continue the example above. Let's say your why is to make it down a trail you've never tried or never been able to make it to the end. Your what will be your Jeep, your vehicle that will fulfill your why.
How is the fun part, start writing down all the things that you have to do get to you what. You'll have a big ol' list, which if you stop there is not going to be any fun. Now look over your list. Any items you can lump together into one project? What are the top 3 items? What is the top item? Check out my post on the 80/20 rule - 20% of your actions account for 80% of your results. Find the 20% that matters and do those!
Now that you have your short list, let's take an additional two steps. Pick the date you want to accomplish a tasks or group of tasks and write it next to the task. Now imagine its that day and you have finished that task putting you closer to your big goal. How does it feel? Imagine your future self who has accomplished these things and who you become. Write those down too. Now how do you feel about getting that work done?! Fired up! Right?
Again, to our example, you may think I need a bigger lift, more armor, bigger tires, a winch, bigger gears, more horsepower, lockers, and other upgrades to complete the trail. So you write all those down and then think of the 80/20 rule. Which one or two of these upgrades can get you through the trail. Maybe you can pair a winch with more armor and drag yourself over the tough spots. You could opt for the bigger lift and lockers to give you more clearance and better traction. You could get bigger tires and gears which will give you more clearance, an easier time rolling over big rocks and more torque at the wheels. Would it be nice to do all the upgrades? Yes. Do you have to before you go out and give it a shot? No.
Who you add to your project can be a big multiplier. Let's say you know someone who also has an off-road rig and does their own upgrades. You tell them about your mission, to complete this gnarly trail and ask them to help you out. If they are interested this can save you lots of money (vs. paying a shop), tons of time (vs. learning how to do it all yourself) and you'll have someone to go with you in case you get stuck or worse, break something. You should always wheel with a buddy and go prepared, with radios, warm clothes, food and water.
I know this was a longer read and I hope that you'll find it worth while. If your why gets really fired up, it'll help you get through the tough spots and get to that feeling of accomplishment.
